+ What is the Yenching Global Symposium (YGS)?

The Yenching Global Symposium (YGS) brings together people from different fields and across generations with a common interest: China. The four-day event will comprise engaging speakers and interactive events on the topic of Xinnovation: Identity of Innovation in China. Under this theme, YGS participants will challenged to innovate upon the conventional understandings of innovation, and how that will fit into China's future. This conference will not only feature prominent international scholars and leading young professionals from a wide range of fields, but also provide a highly focused, application-based experiential learning platform.

+ Where is the YGS?

The Yenching Global Symposium is hosted by the Yenching Academy at Peking University, Beijing, China.

+ When is the YGS?

The Yenching Global Symposium will take place on the dates March 23-26, 2017. Delegates will arrive by the evening of March 22nd.

+ Who will be delegates at the YGS?

There will be approximately 200 delegates at the Yenching Global Symposium. They will be composed of China Scholars, Global Scholars, and Innovation Leaders. To apply, delegates must be under 30 years old. Please see our application page for more details.

+ Why should I apply to be a delegate at the YGS?

We offer ambitious students and young professionals from around the world the opportunity to come to China and be inspired by:

  • a diverse body of global scholars from leading universities,
  • innovation leaders, sharing their passion for social entrepreneurship,
  • speakers from renowned universities, enterprises, and international organizations.

The Symposium is a platform for connecting leaders on China, across generations and between disciplines. It will help connect you with inspiring, likeminded peers as well as leading experts who share your interest in China. These interactions will take place at Peking University, China’s top university.

As a delegate, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences with innovation while collaboarting with others to generate fruitful exchange and construct frameworks for action on China's most challenging issues.

Finally, we cover all expenses of your round-trip flight, accommodation, and meals for the duration of the Symposium.

+ When is the application deadline to be a delegate?

Applications are due on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at midnight CST (China Standard Time).

+ What if I can only attend part of the YGS?

Due to the large number of students interested in attending YGS, only delegates who are available for all four days (March 23-26, 2017) will be selected to attend the event. If your availability changes, please let us know immediately.

+ How will YGS delegates be selected?

To apply, delegates must be under 30 years old. Delegates can be young professionals or students (post-graduate/Master's degree and higher). We are recruiting a diverse group of delegates from around the world from different disciplines. We are looking for enthusiasm and motivation for the Symposium's vision as well as a strong, demonstrated interest in China.

Application results will be sent out by January 1, 2017. Accepted delegates will receive formal invitation letters to attend.

+ Do I have to pay anything if I am selected as a YGS delegate?

If you are selected as a delegate, the Yenching Global Symposium will cover your return flight tickets, accommodation, and meals for the duration of the event. Delegates have to bear visa expenses (if any) and are advised to carry some money for personal expenses, sightseeing, etc.

+ What kind of documents do I need to apply for the YGS?

We require you to submit a CV and the completed application form. Non-native speakers of English must also include their TOEFL/IELTS scores in their applications.

+ Can undergraduate students apply to be YGS delegates?

Unfortunately, no. Only graduate students (post-graduate/Master's degree and higher) are eligible to apply to the YGS. In countries where Bachelor's and Master's degrees are combined, delegates need to have been enrolled at a university for more than four years, i.e. be at least in your fifth year of studies.

+ What can I get out of the YGS?

The Yenching Global Symposium aims to broaden our understanding of China. It invites a selected group of young professionals and graduate students to China and offers them a chance to derive actionable and tangible insights. It encourages delegates to share their insights. The YGS will facilitate linkages between its alumni after the Symposium ends and build a community connecting upcoming and established scholars and practitioners.
